Last Friday at Darlington Dragway in South Carolina, Plum Quick Motors set a new Guinness World Records mark for the fastest golf cart. Company president Robby Steen who also set the previous mark last year finishing a quarter mile in 14.183 seconds while hitting a max speed of 103.65 mph outdid himself with an astonishing 12.24 seconds blitz reaching speeds of 118.76 mph. Incredibly, the set of clubs on the back didn't even fall off.
Plum Quick sells high performance cart motors for off-roading, hunting, cruising, and even for golfers looking for a little get-up-and-go. Their top of the line Assassin retails for $650 and can propel a golf cart up to 40 mph. Once Steen slowed down to recharge, we were able to catch up with this speed demon of the golf cart world.
What upgrades were made to the cart to make it so blisteringly fast--118.76 mph?
We built a special High Performance DC motor for this cart called "Black Ops" and we put in a lithium ion battery pack which saved around 650 lbs., so it was a combination of a very powerful motor [coupled] with a very powerful battery pack.
Did the cart need a drag chute to help stop it?
The cart has 4 wheel golf cart disc brakes and they work good because you have a long straightaway to slow down at the end of the ¼ mile strip
If you took the golf bag off the back do you think it could go even faster?
Yes, I could make the cart lighter, which would increase speed, but I was only using 85% power out of the battery pack....full power, you can't keep the cart on the track.
Is there any trickle down/technology between this record setting cart and the motors you sell to the public?
Yes, that's the sole reason we got into the golf cart drag racing, to test our products under extreme conditions.
